U11s win Friendship Cup
12th January 2016
Drogheda Boys U11A enjoyed a roller-coaster style experience at the finals of the Friendship Cup at the fantastic Hartstown/Huntstown FC venue.
After qualifying the previous weekend from a group with Maynooth Town, Dunboyne AFC and Castleknock Celtic, the lads returned to the venue for the semi-final against the very talented East Meath United. In a tense affair which went into extra time after a 2-2 draw, the match was decided by the dreaded penalty shootout, Drogheda were the lucky ones on this occasion with Domo Linkevicius scoring the last penalty.
The final was a wonderful footballing spectacle from both Drogheda and opponents Corduff. After scoring early, Corduff added another in the second half and looked to have done enough. But with 90 seconds remaining, goals from Sami Soyemi and Ben Lynagh rescued the game for Drogheda, and both teams entered into extra time.
Although the drogs were visibly the more weary entering their second period of extra time for the day, they showed great character, keeping possession for extended periods and unanswered goals from Soyemi, Domo Linkevicius, and Erik Beliauskas ensured victory.
